Ceres varsity swimmers compete at league championships

Ceres High's varsity boys and girls swim teams both finished in second place at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on April 27 at Pacheco.

Central Valley's girls placed sixth, while the Hawks' boys squad (last) failed to score. Both teams competed with thin rosters.

"Everybody did really well because they've been working really hard at practice," Bulldogs head coach Rebecca Sanders said.

"It's very hard to compete with the numbers we have," Hawks head coach Sarah Willems said. "The kids know that. The goal was to improve times and win their heats. It's the end of the season so you want to always see that."

Ceres High's boys had 11 individual placers.

Jacob Stone finished first in the 100 fly.

Zach Jones finished first in the 100 free and third in the 50 free.

Dylan Hines finished second in the 100 back and third in the 200 IM.

Manuel Hernandez finished fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free.

Stefan Perry finished fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 IM.

Joseph Ochoa finished fifth in the 100 free and 100 fly.

Gianni Blandino finished fifth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 free.

Erik Weststeyn finished sixth in the 100 fly.

Austin Massie finished sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 100 breast.

Cody Azevedo finished seventh in the 200 free and 500 free.

Mario Gonzalez finished eighth in the 100 back.

The Bulldogs had two runner-up relay teams. Hernandez, Jones, Stone and Hines teamed up in both the 400 free and 200 medley.

Haley Fisicaro, Tori Gunzenhauser, Maureen Nelson, Megan Braverman, Megan Valenzuela and Jasmine Connolly paced Ceres High's girls.

Fisicaro finished second in the 50 free and 100 fly.

Gunzenhauser finished second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 free.

Nelson finished second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 free.

Braverman finished third in the 500 free and seventh in the 100 back.

Valenzuela finished fifth in the 100 fly and sixth in the 200 IM.

Connolly finished eighth in the 200 free.

Ceres High's 200 medley relay team of Fisicaro, Gunzenhauser, Nelson and Braverman finished second. The quartet was also runner-up in the 400 free relay.

The crosstown Hawks brought a total of 13 swimmers to the WAC finals, including just four boys.

Jesse Magana placed 13th in the 100 back and 25th in the 100 free.

Tyler Owens placed 14th in the 50 free and 100 free.

Thomas Rogers placed 14th in the 100 breast and 15th in the 50 free.

Central Valley's 200 medley relay team of Magana, Rogers, Braden Rambo and Owens placed 10th.

Central Valley's 200 free relay team team of Rogers, Rambo, Magana and Owens placed 12th.

Central Valley's girls top performers were Savanna Alvear, Marissa Ortega, Stephanie Navarro, Victoria Gutierrez, Kathleen Rambo, Sorrayar Sounthala, Deja Jackson, Monica Ventura and Coralyn Brown.

Alvear took fourth in the 100 back and eighth in the 50 free.

Ortega took 14th in the 100 back.

Navarro took 21st in the 100 breast.

Gutierrez took 22nd in the 100 free.

Rambo took 26th in the 100 free.

Sounthala took 39th in the 50 free.

Jackson took 51st in the 50 free.

Ventura took 53rd in the 50 free.

Central Valley's 200 free relay team of Brown, Sounthala, Jackson and Ortega took seventh.

Central Valley's 200 medley relay team of Brown, Navarro, Alvear and Gutierrez took ninth.
