Competing in its final tournament of the summer, Ceres High School's baseball team struggled to an 0-4 finish at the 20th Ron Vermeulen Tournament.

"We had several key components missing with basketball and football going on, and the holidays," Bulldogs head coach Bret Durossette said. "The kids we had put a great effort forward. We're appreciative of that."

Ceres High lost to Downey (10-2) and Valley Christian (7-1) on Friday, July 3, St. Ignatius (5-4) on Thursday, July 2 and Franklin of Elk Grove (11-4) on Wednesday, July 1.

The Bulldogs were outscored 33-11 by their four opponents.

"That's an area we haven't been too good in," Durossette said.

Ceres High played more than 18 games this summer. The Bulldogs posted a 1-2 record at the 24th Lee Hampson Summer Classic.

"The whole purpose of doing this was trying to get us better for next year," Durossette said. "There were some bright spots."

Ceres High will be vying for a playoff berth during the 2010 Valley Oak League season. The Bulldogs will be led by returnees Tyler Cummings (pitcher/infielder), Dustin Baisdon (pitcher/utility) and Brent Ward (pitcher/utility).

"We better be in the top tier of our conference next year," Durossette said. "We should be very competitive."
