Central Valley High School's varsity boys basketball team won one of two games at the Whitney Tournament last week.

"Overall, it was a good start to the season," Hawks head coach Darryl Dickson said. "My post players are doing really well. Our guards have to do a better job."

Central Valley opened the round-robin tournament with a 59-50 win against Benicia on Friday.

Post players David Griffin (16) and Miguel Rodriguez (13) combined for 29 points.

Sonny Moun had nine points.

Hector Jacobo, Jamal Wessinger and Camron Thornton finished with five points apiece.

Nate Villegas and Ruben Figueora added four and two points, respectively.

Central Valley lost 84-64 to the host Thunder on Saturday.

Griffin, Villegas and Rodriguez tallied 15, 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Miguel averaged 11.5 points per game. The sophomore center will spend the entire preseason at the varsity level.

"He did exceptional," Dickson said. "We have until January to decide what to do with him."

The Hawks also need to solidify their guard play.

Central Valley totaled more than 50 turnovers at the Rocklin tournament.

"That hurt us," Dickson said. "We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball."
