Dawgs, Hawks start cross country season

The Ceres and Central Valley high school cross country teams participated in a Valley Oak League cluster meet on Wednesday at Caswell Memorial State Park.

The Ceres High varsity girls team posted a 3-4 record. The Bulldogs beat the Manteca Buffaloes (15-50), Oakdale Mustangs (15-50) and Central Valley Hawks (19-36). They lost to the East Union Lancers (17-46), Weston Ranch Cougars (17-46), Sierra Timberwolves (15-48) and Sonora Wildcats (16-47).

Mayra Abreo took 17th with a time of 23 minutes, 37 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

Llaneh Patino, Jennifer Perez, Daena Trujillo, Araceli Corona, Erica Castrejon, Eli Cruz, Dina Mota, Otoma Agnew and Diana Martinez took 38th (27:01), 39th (27:28), 42nd (28:11), 43rd (28:17), 53rd (30:15), 54th (30:17), 57th (31:37), 60th (32:43) and 65th (36:02), respectively.

The Central Valley varsity girls team compiled a 2-5 record. The Hawks defeated Manteca (15-50) and Oakdale (15-50). They lost to Weston Ranch (15-48), Sonora (15-50), East Union (15-50), Ceres 19-36) and Sierra (15-50).

Victoria Medina led the way with a 33rd-place finish (26:35). Madalyn Khut, Jessica Martinez, Angela Medina, Brianna Gamboa, Jasmin Bertram, Andrea Munoz, Jeannette Jacobo, Sonya Bhatti, Iqbal Kaur and Lahna Dixon took 45th (28:27), 46th (28:29), 48th (28:49), 51st (29:28), 58th (32:37), 60th (34:27), 61st (34:58), 62nd (35:11), 63rd (35:43) and 66th (37:57), respectively.

The Ceres High varsity boys squad amassed a 1-6 record. The Bulldogs downed the Hawks (26-29). They lost to the Cougars (18-39), Mustangs (26-29), Buffaloes (23-36), Lancers (24-32), Timberwolves (18-45) and Wildcats (15-50).

Alejandro Garcia was Ceres' top finisher (10th). He completed the 3.1-mile race in 18:54.

Gabriel Sanchez, Steven Chavez, Iqbal Singh, Edward Lopez, Balpreet Sandhu, Johnny Neang, Eric Farias and Thomas Raya placed 24th (20:46), 40th (22:28), 48th (23:05), 51st (23:27), 53rd (23:36), 57th (24:08), 63rd (25:17) and 71st (36:10), respectively.

The Central Valley varsity boys squad went 0-7. The Hawks lost to Weston Ranch (15-41), Oakdale (26-29), Manteca (22-36), Ceres (26-29), East Union (26-30), Sierra (15-44) and Sonora (15-50).

Rudy Reynoso paced Central Valley with a 26th-place finish (20:55).

Rigel Smart, Ernesto Hernandez, Jonathan Burgos, Jose Reyes, Louis Bracamonte, Justin Lomeli and Ricardo Vargas finished 30th (21:18), 31st (21:39), 43rd (22:40), 52nd (23:34), 53rd (23:53), 61st (25:10) and 69th (no time), respectively.
