Central Valley High School's frosh-soph boys basketball team suffered its eighth and ninth losses of the Valley Oak League season last week.

The Hawks continue to be plagued by the same problems according to head coach Ryan Edwards.

"We miss layups," he said. "We throw the ball away. We don't rebound. It's been a vicious cycle."

Central Valley opened the VOL portion of its schedule with an 11-point win over Lathrop on Jan. 5.

The Hawks struggled during the rematch as they lost 60-28 to the Spartans last Wednesday on the road.

Josh Claudio had a team-high nine points for Central Valley. Edgar Urbieta and Jonathon Martinez both contributed six points. Benji Magana scored five points. Mark Santos and Barrett Blunt tallied three points apiece.

The Hawks fell behind 27-12 at the break.

Lathrop outscored Central Valley 20-5 in the fourth quarter.

Urbieta scored a team-high 18 points during the Hawks' 66-44 loss to host Weston Ranch on Friday.

Martinez, Claudio, Santos and Anthony Stavrianoudakis added nine, seven, five and three points, respectively.

Central Valley trailed 31-17 at halftime.

The Hawks (1-9) will host Oakdale today and Manteca on Friday.

Disappointing loss

Central Valley High School's freshman boys basketball team coasted to a 78-46 win over Lathrop on Jan. 5 in Ceres.

The Hawks visited the Spartans on Wednesday and returned home with a 42-35 loss.

"I saw it before the game," Central Valley head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "Our guys were messing around. They weren't mentally focused. They thought they'd show up and win."

Miguel Rodriguez finished with a team-high 14 points for the Hawks, who fell to 2-8 in the VOL standings. Hawk Duarte, Daniel Alvarez and Abraham Navarro netted 11, seven and three points, respectively.

Lathrop remained in control from start to finish.

"They outplayed us the whole game," coach Rodriguez said.
