The Ceres High boys golf team extended its winning streak to three with a 203 to 226 victory over Downey under steady rain at Modesto Municipal Golf Course on Thursday.

Ceres coach Butch Mendonca was pleased with his team's performance but expects more.

"We should be shooting in the 190s or lower every time," Mendonca said.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-4 in the Central California Conference standings.

The Knights fell to 3-6 in the CCC.

Two of Ceres' five players posted scores in the 30s.

Ben Martinez shot a 2-over-par 37.

"He's been playing the best," Mendonca said.

Nick Wilcox shot a 39.

Jeff Warn shot a 40.

"Jeff has been playing pretty steady," Mendonca said.

Adam Dusi shot a 43.

"Adam's improved his scores," Mendonca said.

Chad Jantz shot a 44.

"Chad hasn't been playing up to par but we're working on that," Mendonca said.

Ryan Jackson, Paul Streeter, Kevin Smith, Glenn Watson and Zach Mucha shot 41, 44, 45, 46 and 49, respectively for the Knights.

Dawgs win by forfeit

Ceres defeated Modesto High via forfeit at Modesto Muni on Tuesday, March 23. The Bulldogs totaled 194.

"That's our best score of the year because there was no pressure," Mendonca said. "They knew they won it."

Ceres improved to 4-4 in the Central California Conference standings.

Modesto fell to 1-7 in league.

"Modesto had to forfeit their last three matches because they didn't have enough players," Mendonca said.

The Panthers only have four players. Six players start and the top five scores count.

Individual scores from the Ceres/Modesto match will be used by coaches during the selection of all-league teams at the end of the season.

"Four of our five players were in the 30s," Mendonca said.

Martinez fired a 2-over-par 37.

Wilcox fired a 3-over-par 38.

Warn and Dusi both fired 39. That's the best round of golf Dusi has played this season.

Jantz fired a 41.

Blaine Schmidt, Billy Foulds, William Gish and Justin Nickerson carded 37, 43, 48 and 52, respectively, for Modesto.

Ceres versus Johansen

The Vikings edged the Bulldogs via tiebreaker at Modesto Muni on March 4.

Ceres will seek revenge against the Vikings at Creekside today at 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs should have an opportunity to win the match if they post a score in the 180s. "Everybody has to be a little bit more consistent," Mendonca said. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
