Golfers improve to 8-5

The Ceres High boys golf team turned in a dominant performance against Grace Davis on Wednesday at Modesto Creekside Golf Course. The Bulldogs defeated the Spartans by 13 strokes, 202-215.

"It's nice to see the kids come in with smiles on their faces," said Ceres coach Butch Mendonca. "We played our best match of the year."

The victory helped Ceres remain in third-place in the Modesto Metro Conference. The Bulldogs improved to 8-5 in the MMC, 10-5 overall. The Spartans fell to 5-8 in the league standings.

All six of Ceres' players posted respectable scores.

Jeff Warn finished with a 2-over-par 38. He had one birdie, four pars and four bogeys.

"Jeff birdied the last hole, which is the toughest one out there," Mendonca said.

Nick Wilcox shot 3-over-par 39. He had one birdie, four pars and four bogeys.

"His goal is to be low medalist in the league," Mendonca said. "The last player to do that was Ryan Thornberry."

Chad Jantz shot 4-over-par 40. He had one birdie, four pars, three bogeys and one double bogey.

Bobby McFarlane fired a 42. He had four pars, four bogeys and one double bogey.

Sophomore Tyler Smith and freshman Ron Fry both carded career-best 43s. They had four pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

Aaron Devenport and Andrew Lark led the Spartans with a 4-over-par 40s. Will Bossard, Kevin Drake and Jeremy Hicks shot 43, 44 and 48, respectively.

Ceres 220, Modesto 245

The Bulldogs took care of business against last-place Modesto High on Tuesday, April 19 at Modesto Creekside Golf Course. Ceres defeated the Panthers by 25 strokes, 220-245.

Both teams struggled.

"We didn't play very well in the wind," Mendonca said. "We had trouble putting thegreens too."

Wilcox shot a 2-over-par 38.

He had two birdies, four pars, two bogeys and one double bogey.

Jantz shot 8-over-par 44.

He had three pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Jantz parred the final three holes.

McFarlane and Warn both shot a 45. McFarlane had two pars, six bogeys and one triple bogey. Warn had two pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys.
