Two of Ceres High's athletes will be competing in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section track and field trials at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College on Thursday.
Megan Gunzenhauser and Dingko Luangchai advanced by finishing in the top eight in their respective events at the sub-section finals at Modesto Junior College Stadium on Tuesday, May 18.
Gunzenhauser advanced to the section trials in one of two events.
The senior placed sixth in a field of 27 in the discus with a personal-best toss of 113 feet, 6 inches. Her previous-best mark of 107 feet was set at the preliminaries earlier in the day.
"She performs very good in big meets," said Ceres coach Drew Brown.
Gunzenhauser set a personal record in the discus with a throw of 105-10 at the sub-section championships last season. She went on to place 10th in the section.
"She has peaked at the end of the season the last two years," Brown said.
Gunzenhauser didn't attend her senior class trip on Thursday because she was busy competing in the shot put event at the sub-section finals.
She placed 21st in a field of 26 with a throw of 28 feet, 3 inches.
"She could have gone to Disneyland," Brown said. "She decided about a month ago she was going to focus on track."
Added Gunzenhauser: "Me and my best friend are going to go to Disneyland this summer."
Gunzenhauser graduates from Ceres High tomorrow evening.
"I should make it back in time," she said.
Luangchai failed to make it past sub-sections in the high jump last season. He rolled an ankle at practice and finished 18th in a field of 21.
"I was upset but I knew I had three years left," said Luangchai, who was just a freshman at the time.
This year, the sophomore placed fifth in a field of 27. He tied a personal record when he cleared 6 feet, 2 inches.
"I did better than last week, so I'm pretty happy," Luangchai said.
Luangchai cleared 6 feet en route to a fifth-place finish at the Central California Conference championships. He would have placed higher if he didn't miss his first attempt at 5-6.
"Somebody moved my mark," he said.
The top four medaled at sub-sections. Fifth and sixth-place finishers received certificates for scoring.
"He looked good," Brown said. "I wouldn't be surprised if he goes over 6-4 this week."
Added Luangchai: "I probably could if I focus on it more."
Two other Bulldogs competed in the high jump at the sub-section meet.
Charlie Cunha and Ross Tate finished 11th and 15th, respectively.
Cunha, a junior, cleared 6 feet.
Tate cleared 5 feet, 10 inches.
"Ross competed real well," Brown said. "He was the only freshman in the high jump."
