Members of the Ceres High cross country team just started training for the 2004 season. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs ran six miles.

On Thursday, Ceres competed against the Sierra Timberwolves at Legion Park in Modesto. Coaches didn't keep score at the scrimmage.

"We're just trying to get some mileage in," said Ceres coach Glenn Driskell, who jotted down times for each of his runners on a yellow notepad. "They weren't even in uniform."

The varsity teams ran three miles.

In the varsity boys division, Benny Perez completed the course in a team-best 19 minutes, 07 seconds. Roland Salazar (21:06), Nick Gardner (21:08), Matt Schwark (23:48) and Pedro Cortes (24:34) followed.

Karrah Brown completed the course in 22:04 in the varsity girls division. Nichole Alvarez (26:17), Dominika Bonner (27:43), Vanessa Medina (27:56), Sadie Tellez (29:10), Cynthia Brambila (32:03) and Brandi Bonillas (32:58) followed.

The frosh-soph and freshman teams ran two miles.

Ceres' top finishers in the frosh-soph boys race were Alex Torres, Kevin Dupree, Chad Hurt, Henry Shambiel, Andrew Chipponeri and Ramsey Magana.

Torres completed the race in 13:14. Dupree (13:24), Hurt (13:30), Shambiel (13:38), Chipponeri (14:02) and Magana (14:24) followed.

Ceres' top freshman finisher was Andre Walcott. He completed the race in 14:14.

Ceres' top finishers in the frosh-soph girls race were Nicole Laranjo (15:03), Katie Lutes (16:32) and Vicki Morales (16:42).

Ceres' top freshman finishers were Marisol Tapia (16:21) and Caitlin Cerny (16:26).

"Hopefully, we'll be able to run more competitively next week," Driskell said.

The Bulldogs scrimmage against Linden at Legion Park tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

"It will be a good month before we start seeing any results," Driskell said.

Ceres' first league meet will be held at Legion Park on Sept. 22. The Bulldogs will race against the Modesto High Panthers. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
