Leslie Wyatt, a third-year member of Central Valley High School's varsity girls golf team, made history last week.

The senior became just the second Hawk player to advance past the Valley Oak League championships.

Wyatt follows in the footsteps of Brooke Davis, who earned two trips to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Playoffs (2006, 2007).

"I did surprise myself by advancing," Leslie said. "I hope the other girls find inspiration from that."

Wyatt, Weston Ranch's Emily Meideros, Oakdale's Jaylene Ponce and Sonora's Amanda Tye, Lauren Babros and Jenna Kirk, the top six individuals not on qualifying teams, received invitations to divisionals because of their consistent play on the year.

Leslie placed 19th with a 113 at the 18-hole VOL Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Brookside Country Club. She finished 16th in the overall point standings.

"Going into the tournament, I knew I was on the edge," Wyatt said. "I didn't stress out about it. I just kept a positive attitude. I could have done better, especially on my putting. I could have shaved off 10 strokes. The greens were really fast. It was a challenging course."

Determined to succeed, Leslie worked extra hard during the offseason. She even dedicated additional time to the sport this fall.

"I took some lessons over the summer and practice a lot more," Wyatt said.

"She has a lot more confidence this year," said Tina Collier, Central Valley's head coach.

When asked about her future plans, Wyatt said: "I'm not sure what college I'm going to but I want to continue to play. I love golf. It's a mind game. You have to think about things a lot."

Central Valley had four members participate in the Valley Oak League's nine-hole tournament last week.

Louisa Jacquez fired a 66 on her way to a fifth-place finish at the 12-person event.

"She hit the ball solid all day," Collier said.

Hawk teammates Martina Bernal, Jessenia Rivera and Ashley Orozco took sixth (68), eighth (73) and 12th (78), respectively.
