Ruben Valenzuela and his Ceres Hawks wrestling teammates captured medals at the SJWA Central Valley High School Freestyle Tournament last Saturday.

The Ceres Hawks wrestling club didn't disappoint its hometown fans this past week.

Ceres had four first-place finishes, three seconds and four thirds while competing at the San Joaquin Wrestling Association Central Valley High School Freestyle Tournament on Saturday.

"I was actually really impressed with the kids," Hawks President Jorge Saucedo said. "All year, they've been showing up to practice and working hard."

Luis Saucedo (Cadet-103 pounds), Ruben Valenzuela (Intermediate-95), Ethan Rotondo (Schoolboy-98) and Marcus Priesta (Bantam-55) claimed gold medals.

Saucedo compiled a perfect 4-0 record.

Valenzuela, Rotondo and Priesta swept all three of their opponents.

Gregory Mathvin (Intermediate-95), John Alba (Schoolboy-136) and David Caravalho (Schoolboy-152) placed second in their respective divisions.

Mathvin and Alba both won two of three matches.
Caravalho won one of two matches.

Brian Becerra (Schoolboy-91), Julian Rosales (Intermediate-90), Paul Ruiz (Bantam-50) and Sebastian Saucedo (Intermediate-112) all placed third.

Becerra, Rosales and Ruiz had identical 1-2 marks.
Saucedo lost twice.

"The kids did great," Jorge Saucedo said. "It was pretty awesome."

Ceres plans to take 12 of its wrestlers to the Dave Shultz Kids Freestyle State Championships later this month in Fresno.

The tournament will run May 31-June 2 at Selland Arena.
