Hawks unbeaten in preseason play

Central Valley High School's varsity boys soccer team collected three wins and one tie on its way to a first-place finish at the Gregori Invitational this past week.

The Hawks captured the Pitman tournament crown on Aug. 25.

"The kids are very motivated," head coach Omar Leon said. "High school is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They're trying to do things right. It's their opportunity to succeed and make history. Hopefully, they don't get overconfident and lose interest. Once we start league, we're going to play against strong teams."

Central Valley shut out Riverbank 3-0 for the championship at the Gregori tourney Saturday afternoon.

Diego Duran, Ozzie Ramos and Jaime Luna all scored one goal for the Hawks.

Juan Martinez had one assist.

Goalkeeper David Saucedo made two saves.

"It was a very intense game," Leon said. "The kids executed what I wanted."

Central Valley defeated Merced 3-0 Saturday morning.

Duran, Martinez and Juan Medrano led the way with one goal apiece.

Anthony Calvo dished out one assist.

Saucedo had six saves.

Central Valley edged Enochs 1-0 in the opening round on Saturday.

Saucedo totaled nine saves.

Juan Hernandez accounted for the Hawks' lone goal.

Hernandez scored less than two minutes into the game off a pass from Omar Orozco, who missed the previous tournament with a leg injury.

Central Valley and Buhach Colony battled to a 2-2 tie.

Medrano and Orozco both tallied one goal.

Hernandez and Samuel Martinez contributed one assist each.

Saucedo had three saves.

The Hawks routed Hughson 9-1 and Modesto High 3-0 on Thursday and Aug. 28, respectively, in Ceres.

Daniel Hernandez and Jairo Gaspar both scored three goals.

Duran and Ramos each had two goals.

Calvo and Juan Martinez chipped in with one goal apiece.

Saucedo accumulated 10 saves.

The Hawks (9-0-1) wrap up their preseason schedule this week.

Central Valley will face Manteca and Escalon.

The Hawks will try to keep their unbeaten record intact.
