Unable to recover from a horrendous start against Yuba City, Central Valley High School's varsity boys basketball team had to settle for a runner-up finish at its home tournament this past week.

The Honkers made six of their first seven shots and blasted the Hawks 90-65 Saturday night in Ceres.

"I don't feel like we were unprepared," Central Valley head coach Darryl Dickson said. "The game plan was right. We played physical and aggressive. It was a step up in competition. I think our guys came out a little intimidated. I attribute some of that to age. They're young."

Hawk sophomore Manuel Garcia made three treys and tallied all of his team-high 12 points in the second quarter against Yuba City.

Abraham Navarro collected a season-high 10 points.

Ja'Quan Gardner, sophomore Parker Griffin and Juan Manriquez all scored eight points.

All-tournament pick Jordan Thornton, sophomore Jaron Dickson and Jordan Sek contributed six, five and three points, respectively.

Diego Sanchez and Amrit Chahal both added two points.

Tranjit Singh had one point.

Tanner McAlister scored a game-high 17 points for the Honkers (8-6).

All-tourney selection Gurpreet Singh and Travis Blas both totaled 13 points.

Taylor Elkins, tournament MVP, had 11 points.

Yuba City outscored Central Valley 25-8 in the opening period on their way to building a 46-30 lead in the first half.

"Our defense is what caused us to lose the game," Thornton said. "We weren't closing out. We were letting them drive. We hurt ourselves. We didn't play like we should have. We were motivated. We were hoping to get first place. I had a bad game today. I'm not sure I should have got it (all-tourney recognition). But I'm happy."

Added Dickson: "He (Thornton) hustles harder than everyone else on the team. I need to get the other guys to follow his lead."

The Hawks (6-9) won two of three games at their home tournament.

Central Valley won by blowout, 69-42, versus Sierra Ridge on Friday.

Central Valley led 57-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
