Members of Ceres High's and Central Valley's varsity boys tennis programs competed at the Western Athletic Conference Doubles Tournament last Thursday in Los Banos.

Seniors Christian Pimentel and Angelo Marino advanced to the semifinals while representing the Bulldogs for the final time.

"I'm not surprised," Pimentel said. "We played together our sophomore year. We have a lot of chemistry."

Pimentel and Marino lost 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 to Livingston's Michael Leon and Andrew Leon in the semifinals.

Christian and Angelo defeated Los Banos' Ethan Machado and Parker Smith 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

"I thought we could have made it to the finals," Pimentel said. "We had the talent to beat them (Livingston's tandem). They were on top of their game. They were more prepared."

Central Valley juniors Juan Zaragoza and Rogelio Perez won one of their two doubles matches en route to a top-eight finish.

"They've never played doubles together," Hawks' head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "They performed like I thought they would. They were competitive. Their styles complemented each other."

Zaragoza and Perez lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to Livingston's Michael Leon and Andrew Leon in the quarterfinals.

"They played a good first set," Rodriguez said.

Juan and Rogelio defeated Pacheco's Isaiah Houston-Sosa and Luis Gaxiola 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

"We had more experience and a little more talent," Rodriguez said.

Central Valley seniors Ivan Jimenez and Adrian Gomez lost to 6-4, 6-3 to Los Banos' Kyle Jackson and Patrick Martinez in the opening round.

"I thought they played decent," Rodriguez said. "They just made too many unforced errors."
