Members of Ceres High’s girls and boys wrestling programs spent part of their Christmas break in Reno.

“Overall, I think we did well,” said Adam Borges, second-year head coach of the boys team. “It’s a really tough tournament. I was hoping to get someone to the second day. We haven’t had anybody make it the last few years until this season.”

“It’s a high-level tournament,” Ceres High girls leader Curtis Hulstine said. “They all did a good job competing.”

Madeline Schultz and Elizabeth Boyd made history while representing Ceres High’s girls team at the Sierra Nevada Classic, which was staged Dec. 26-29 at the Reno Events Center.

“Her (Schultz) and Elizabeth are the first girls from Ceres High School to bring home medals from that tournament,” Hulstine said. “They wrestled really well.”

Schultz placed fifth with a 4-2 record in the 190-pound weight bracket.

She bested Lassen’s Journey Costello (pin, 0:56), Granite Bay’s Vicki Millan (pin, 2:36), Shadow Ridge’s Lay Augafa (pin, 1:31) and Reed’s Ellie Smith (pin, 2:09) in Reno.

“She was very aggressive like she always is.”

Boyd placed sixth with a 4-3 record at 170 pounds.

She bested Oakridge’s Kayden Liberidhs (pin, 2:49). Kelso’s Jacinda Marshall (pin, 1:18), Ponderosa’s Olivia Russell (pin, 0:58) and La Grande’s Lainey Wolfe (pin, 3:28).

“She’s been very consistent. She’s getting better as time goes on. It’s been fun to watch.”

Dayanna Alvarez, Mezmeriah Zuniga, Isabella Nungaray, Abigail Schultz, Gabriella Cole and Aliah Ricaud also wrestled at the Sierra Nevada Classic.

Alvarez (145s), Zuniga (135s) and Nungaray (110s) all posted 2-2 records.

Cole (105s) and Abigail Schultz (130s) both posted 1-2 records.

Ricaud (115s) lost twice.

Ceres High finished 18th overall in the team standings with 61 points.

Parker Borges and Jaime Torres compiled winning records while representing Ceres High’s boys team at the Sierra Nevada Classic last month.

“Those kids have high expectations,” coach Borges said.

Parker Borges posted a 4-2 record in the 144-pound weight bracket.

“It was a big accomplishment making it to the second day of the tournament,” coach Borges said. “He faced tough competition. He performed really well. He did a good job executing his game plans. He wrestled to his potential. He would say otherwise. He thought he should have been able to medal.”

Parker Borges bested Lowry’s Teyo Gomez (pin, 0:34), Lassen’s Samuel Blue (pin, 2:05), Harrisburg’s Justin Hoyt (decision, 11-4) and Mc Kinleyville’s Na-tess Marquez (pin, 0:53).

Torres posted a 3-2 record at 190 pounds.

He fell one win shy of advancing to the second day of the event.

“He wrestled one of his best tournaments,” coach Borges said. “He’s a very strong kid. He works hard. He’s very coachable. That’s helping him be successful.”

Torres bested Vanden’s Corbin Erickson (pin, 1:14), Desert Vista’s Maddox Bouck (pin, 2:32) and Whitney’s Nicky Carabajal (pin, 0:55).

Bulldog teammates Hunter Hammons, McCoy Adams, Calen Adams, Michael King, Alijah Jackson and Daniel Tubera also competed at the Sierra Nevada Classic.

Hammons (285s) and McCoy Adams (120s) both posted 2-2 record.

King (113s) and Calen Adams (113s) both posted 1-2 records.

Jackson (106s) and Tubera (138s) both lost twice.

Ceres High placed 59th in the team standings.

The Bulldogs totaled 37 points.
