Omar Orozco joined Central Valley High School's varsity boys soccer team his sophomore year.

The speedy senior striker broke former Hawk standout Daniel Ochoa's single-season goals record on Oct. 15.

Omar scored twice in Central Valley's 4-0 win over 2012 Western Athletic Conference co-champion Patterson and pushed his annual total to 39.

"It means a lot," Orozco said. "That record was supposed to last years. I broke it right away. I'm actually surprised."

Ochoa set the previous record of 38 in 2011.

"He's having an excellent year," head coach Omar Leon said. "He's on fire. The rest of the team trusts him. Hopefully, he stays consistent."

Orozco ranks No. 1 in the state in goals and points (88).

He's also dished out 10 assists.

A tough matchup for opposing defenses, Omar has upped his productivity each season.

"He knew this was going to be his year," Leon said. "He prepared for it. He was here all summer working hard."

Orozco failed to earn WAC honors a year ago despite collecting 19 goals and seven assists.

"It upset me," he said. "It was motivation."

Orozco was a second-team, all-league pick in 2011. Omar had 14 goals and four assists.

"He's a lot faster and stronger this year," Leon said. "He's a good listener. He's finishing."

Ochoa totaled a program-record 88 goals and dished out 27 assists during his four-year career with the Hawks. He was voted WAC MVP as a senior in 2011. Daniel helped lead Central Valley to a 69-9-11 overall record, four league titles and playoff berths, and two section finals appearances.

"Omar is a lot faster," Leon said while comparing Orozco and Ochoa. "His shot is just as powerful. The only difference is Omar's a natural righty but can score with both legs. That's why he's having such a great year."

Orozco has accumulated 72 goals, the second-highest total in program history, and 21 assists since earning a roster spot on the Hawks' varsity squad.

"Our style of play fits Omar," Leon said. "We like to play it on the ground. There are 19 other players on the team that work really hard to create scoring opportunities for him."

Orozco will be remembered as one of Central Valley's all-time greatest players.

He'll join a list that includes Ochoa, Jose Ramirez, Gerardo Cazares and Hawk teammate/2012 WAC Most Valuable Player Ozzie Ramos.

Ramos ranks first in assists (24), second in points (76) and fourth in goals (26) in the state.

Ochoa (WAC, 2011), Cazares (WAC, 2010) and Ramirez (VOL, 2009) were also voted league MVPs.

"Omar's part of that group," Leon said.

Added Orozco: "I played with Daniel. He's a great player. He wanted me to beat his record."
