Cesar Chavez Jr. High eighth-grader Cade Cowell added to his medal collection while excelling at the 71st Annual Harold Pope Junior Relays on May 5 at Modesto Junior College.

Cowell placed first in four individual events, including the 100 (11.69), 200 (25.07), 70 hurdles (10.10) and long jump (19-61/2).

"He's a tremendous athlete," coach Jason Martin said. "He works hard, too."
Cade has won a total of seven gold medals at the Pope Relays.

He swept the 70 hurdles, high jump and long jump in the seventh grade.

"That's awesome," Martin said. "He's the best junior-high athlete I've seen. I don't think he's lost one individual event in two years. He could probably win any event we put him in. He likes to compete."

Chavez's Alyssa Rojo (eighth-grade girls) and Gabbi Ramirez (seventh-grade girls) also collected awards.

Ramirez placed third in the shot put (26-11) and 11th in the discus (47-5).

Rojo placed sixth in the 800 (2:47.99).

Chavez's Andrew Torres (eighth-grade boys) placed 13th in the 70 hurdles (11.82) and 24th in the 100 during the eight-grade boys meet.

Chavez's Itzayhana Ochoa and Yamily Zaragoza competed in the eighth-grade girls division.

Ochoa placed 10th in the 400 (1:11.29) and 25th in the 100 (14.97).

Zaragoza placed 13th in the shot put (23-6) and 30th in the 100 (15.51).

Chavez's seventh-grade girls 4x100 relay team of Ramirez, Jillian Mande, Malika Zhu and Janessa Godinez placed 10th (1:06.34).

Godinez placed 18th in the 100 (15.35).

Zhu placed 28th in the 200 (34.98) and 36th in the 100 (16.61).

Camille Whyle placed 12th in the 100 (14.81) and 24th in the 200 (32.99).

Blaker-Kinser's Armando Guajardo placed 15th in the long jump (10-51/2) and 24th in the 1,600 (6:39.67) in the seventh-grade boys division.

Chavez's Dakota Adams placed 24th in the 400 (1:17.62) and 34th in the 100 (16.42).

Chavez's Dylan Choup placed 29th in the 400 (1:35.70).
