Ceres High’s baseball program won two major awards during the Western Athletic Conference year-end head coaches’ meeting this past month.

A total of six Bulldogs players garnered all-league recognition, including Vincent Castrejon, Ashton Urena, Aiden Maines, Carson Ulrich, Anthony Trevino and Daniel Davis.

“We had some talented kids,” Ceres High new head coach Bret Durossette said.

Castrejon, a senior shortstop/pitcher, was voted WAC Pitcher of the Year.

“Vinnie had a great year,” Durossette said. “He did exactly what we thought he’d do. He has a lot of talent. He understands the game. Baseball is his life.”

Castrejon batted .458 from the plate with one home run, one triple, two doubles, 21 RBIs, 16 runs, 13 stolen bases and four walks in 14 games.

He had on-base, slugging and on-base plus slugging percentages of .491, .604 and 1.095, respectively.

He had a fielding percentage of .900.

Castrejon ranked first on the team in batting average, hits, triples, RBIs, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging percentage, and second in doubles and stolen bases.

“Vinnie’s really good,” Durossette said. “He’s one of the best shortstops I’ve ever coached. He’s smooth and confident. He makes every play. He gets the job done.”

Castrejon compiled a near-perfect 6-1 record on the mound with a 1.62 earned-run average, 49 strikeouts, 16 walks, one no-hitter and two shutouts in 431/3 innings.

He ranked first on the team in wins and strikeouts.

“Vinnie got ahead of hitters,” Durossette said. “He did his thing.”

Urena, a junior pitcher/infielder, was named Utility Player of the Year.

He batted .409 with two doubles, 10 RBIs, nine runs, five walks and four stolen bases in 14 games.

He had on-base, slugging and on-base plus slugging percentages of .460, .455 and .915, respectively.

He ranked second on the team in batting average, hits, RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging percentage, and third in on-base percentage.

Urena posted a 3-2 record at pitcher with a 4.05 ERA, 29 strikeouts, 10 walks and one no-hitter in 272/3 innings.

“We had no idea who Ashton was when we took over the baseball program,” Durossette said. “He showed signs of greatness. He was successful for a lot of reasons.”

Maines, a senior second baseman, was selected to the WAC First Team.

He batted .350 with one double, eight RBIs, 15 runs and nine stolen bases.

He had on-base and on-base plus slugging percentages of .490 and .865, respectively.

“Aiden was pretty consistent,” Durossette said.

Ulrich, a senior centerfielder, and Trevino, a sophomore first baseman, were both selected to the WAC Second Team.

Ulrich batted .302 with one triple, three doubles, six RBIs, 16 runs, 16 stolen bases and seven walks.

He had an on-base plus slugging percentage of .855.

He ranked first on the team in runs, doubles, triples and stolen bases, second in walks, and third in slugging percentage.

“Carson did great things,” Durossette said. “He had one of the better arms in our league. He had an ungodly amount of stolen bases.”

Trevino batted .306 with four RBIs and seven runs.

“He did what we asked him to do,” Durossette said. “He had a great year.”

Davis, a senior catcher, was an honorable-mention selection.

He batted .308 with three doubles, seven RBIs, 13 runs and 11 stolen bases.

He had on-base and on-base plus slugging percentage of .438 and .823, respectively.

Davis ranked first on the team in doubles and third in runs.

“He was a solid baseball player,” Durossette said. “He caught almost every game for us.”

Ceres High enjoyed one of its most successful seasons to date during Durossette’s third stint as head coach.

The Bulldogs amassed a 19-9 overall record, finished in second place in the WAC with a 10-4 record and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-III playoffs.

Ceres High competed with a 10-person roster this spring.

The Bulldogs had just one bench player.

“We had a great year,” Durossette said.
