CHS, CV athletes compete at WAC Championships

Ceres High School's varsity boys and girls swim programs both placed third at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on May 1 in Los Banos.

Competing with thin rosters, crosstown-rival Central Valley's swim squads finished sixth in the team standings at Pacheco High School.

"I'm really proud of all the kids," Bulldogs coach Rebecca Sanders said. "They all swam really well. They worked hard all season."

Zach Jones, Erik Weststeyn, Bobby Baranski, Caleb Bishop, Connor Mills, Logan Kier, Nathan Stone, Tim Campbell, Tristan Freitas-Scott, Michael Barnes, Tino Amaya, Soni Vinay, Ignacio Ochoa, Luis Perez, Marcos Torres and Fernando Vazquez represented Ceres High's boys team, which collected 107 points.

Jones placed first in the 100 free for the fourth consecutive season. He also won the 50 free for the second straight year.

"I'd put him at the top," Ceres High coach Sue Garcia said while talking about Zach's place in Bulldog swim history. "He's done great things during his four years."

Weststeyn placed second in the 500 free and fourth in the 100 fly.

Baranski placed third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free.

Bishop placed fourth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 back.

Mills placed sixth in the 500 free and ninth in the 200 free.

Kier placed sixth in the 200 free and 11th in the 100 back.

Stone placed ninth in the 200 IM and 500 free.

Campbell placed ninth in the 100 breast and 13th in the 50 free.

Freitas-Scott placed 10th in the 50 free.

Barnes placed 11th in the 100 free and 14th in the 100 back.

Amaya placed 13th in the 200 free.

Vinay placed 16th in the 100 breast and 25th in the 100 free.

Ochoa placed 18th in the 100 back and 32nd in the 50 free.

Perez placed 19th in the 100 back and 31st in the 50 free.

Torres placed 24th in the 50 free.

Vazquez placed 26th in the 100 free and 37th in the 50 free.

Ceres High's 400 free relay team of Baranski, Freitas-Scott, Jones and Weststeyn placed first.

Ceres High's 400 free relay team of Kier, Mills, Stone and Amaya placed fifth.

Ceres High's 200 medley relay team of Baranski, Bishop, Jones and Weststeyn placed second.

Ceres High's 200 free relay team of Bishop, Freitas-Scott, Mills and Kier placed third.

Vince Castaneda, Cameron Tucker, Edgar Cervantes, Cesar Armas, Christian Oliver, Sergio Lopez, Josue Lopez, Severo Vazquez, Ryan Miceli and David Laiton represented Central Valley's boys team (11 points).

Castaneda placed eighth in the 100 fly and 14th in the 200 IM.

Tucker placed 10th in the 100 free and 13th in the 200 IM.

Cervantes placed 10th in the 100 back and 14th in the 50 free.

Armas placed 10th in the 100 breast and 15th in the 200 free.

Oliver placed 14th in the 100 free and 15th in the 50 free.

Sergio Lopez placed 14th in the 100 fly and 29th in the 50 free.

Josue Lopez placed 16th in the 100 free and 20th in the 50 free.

Vazquez placed 18th in the 200 free and 33rd in the 50 free.

Miceli placed 20th in the 100 free and 28th in the 50 free.

Laiton placed 22nd in the 100 free and 26th in the 50 free.

Central Valley's 200 free relay team of Tucker, Oliver, Castaneda and Cervantes placed sixth.

Central Valley's 200 medley relay team of Cervantes, Armas, Tucker and Castaneda placed seventh.

El Capitan (172.5) took first in the boys team standings, followed by Los Banos (121), Ceres High, Livingston (75), Pacheco (43), Central Valley and Patterson (10.5).

Ceres High's girls team (103 points) had a host of contributors, including Julia Pata, Ciana Sather, Kiera Brownlee, Annie Connors, Lindsey Reedy, Monae Decamera, Kaitlyn Foster, Taylore Bentley, Madison Mclendon, Melissa Duarte, Arianne Amparo, Jade Dominguez, Katie Allen, Lindsey Oliveira, Jewel Chavez, Jocelyn Garcia, Jaeden Stutler, Makayla Lawrence, Savannah Jordan, Aaliyah Dennis, Angelina Colunga, Bianca Perez, Gurpinder Bahia, Savannah Zielke, Abigail Bernal, Sarveaya Coleman, Harmenjit Bahia, Micaela Franco, Natasha Samra, Evangelique Mejia, Jennifer Martinez and Princess Nungaray.

Pata swept the 50 free and 100 free for the second year in a row.

"She has the ability of holding all of the meet records if she decided to swim different events each year," Garcia said.

Sather placed second in the 100 fly and third in the 100 back.

Brownlee placed third in the 100 back and sixth in the 200 IM.

Connors placed fourth in the 50 free and 100 free.

Reedy placed sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 100 free.

Decamera placed seventh in the 100 back and 13th in the 200 IM.

Foster placed eighth in the 200 free and ninth in the 100 fly.

Bentley placed ninth in the 100 free and 12th in the 50 free.

Mclendon placed ninth in the 100 breast and 16th in the 50 free.

Duarte placed 11th in the 500 free and 16th in the 100 fly.

Amparo placed 13th in the 500 free and 28th in the 100 back.

Dominguez placed 15th in the 500 free.

Allen placed 17th in the 200 IM and 31st in the 50 free.

Oliveira placed 18th in the 200 free and 22nd in the 50 free.

Chavez placed 18th in the 100 breast and 28th in the 50 free.

Garcia placed 18th in the 500 free and 60th in the 50 free.

Stutler placed 19th in the 50 free and 21st in the 100 back.

Lawrence placed 20th in the 100 free and 33rd in the 50 free.

Jordan placed 21st in the 100 free.

Dennis placed 22nd in the 100 free and 34th in the 50 free.

Colunga placed 22nd in the 100 back and 75th in the 50 free.

Perez placed 23rd in the 50 free.

Gurpinder Bahia placed 27th in the 100 free and 49th in the 50 free.

Central Valley's girls team (17 points) brought a total of 13 swimmers to the WAC finals, including Leilani Ortiz, Lisa Serna, Brenda Romo, Vanesa Hernandez, Nina Kees, Simaran Dosanjh, Daisy Robles, Carlie Casal, Olivia Azpeitia, Leticia Sandoval, Yuliana Garcia, Mia Benjamin and Brianna Garcia.

Ortiz placed third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 back.

Serna placed 11th in the 100 back and 17th in the 100 fly.

Romo placed 12th in the 200 free.

Hernandez placed 12th in the 500 free and 27th in the 50 free.

Kees placed 14th in the 500 free and 20th in the 100 back.

Dosanjh placed 15th in the 200 free.

Robles placed 16th in the 200 IM.

Casal placed 19th in the 100 free.

Azpeitia placed 26th in the 100 free and 43rd in the 50 free.

Sandoval placed 32nd in the 50 free.

Garcia placed 39th in the 50 free.

Benjamin placed 49th in the 100 free and 74th in the 50 free.

Garcia placed 51st in the 50 free.

Central Valley's 200 free relay team of Serna, Dosanjh, Hernandez and Ortiz placed eighth.

Central Valley's 400 free relay team of Romo, Sandoval, Casal and Dosanjh placed ninth.

Central Valley's 200 medley relay team of Serna, Ortiz, Dosanjh and Hernandez placed 10th.

El Capitan (192 points) also won the girls team competition.

El Capitan finished ahead of Los Banos (130), Ceres High, Pacheco (34), Livingston (30), Central Valley and Patterson (12).
