Ceres High’s varsity girls water polo and tennis teams have been named the Ceres Courier’s Co-Teams of the Year for the 2019 fall sports season.

Ceres High’s girls water polo team qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for the fourth year in a row under head coach Stephen Dias’ guidance this year.

The Bulldogs posted a 10-5 record and finished in third place in the Western Athletic Conference standings.

Ceres High secured the WAC’s final postseason spot with an 11-8 tiebreaker win over Grace Davis.

The Bulldogs had four players earn all-league honors, including Emily Wolff, Allison McAdams, Elise Cannella and Makayla Estermann.

Wolff, a senior, was named to the WAC First Team.

She led the Bulldogs in scoring with a career-high 83 goals.

McAdams, a junior, was selected to the WAC Second Team.

She had 20 goals.

Cannella and Estermann both received honorable-mention recognition.

Cannella, a sophomore, collected 23 goals.

Estermann, a junior defender, had 10 goals.

“This was a fun team to coach,” said Dias, who’s led Ceres High to five postseason appearances in the last eight years. “There were absolutely zero problems. Everybody was friends and cared about each other. They had a good bond. I’m proud of them.”

Ceres High participated in the playoffs for the second year in a row in girls tennis.

The Bulldogs (9-5) finished third overall in the WAC standings.

Tania Garfias, Jillian Jimenez, Gurmannet Bahia, Jasmine Bahia, Gurmenjit Bahia, Christel Ontiveros, Monica Esparza, Mercedez Wood, Evelin Guardado, Mahnoor Kahloon, Leisha Jimenez and Roxanna Bonilla all contributed.

Garfias was selected to the WAC First Team.

A four-year player with the Bulldogs, Garfias compiled a 9-7 record against league competition in 2019.

She won 8 of 14 matches at No. 1 singles during the conference’s regular season.

She advanced to the quarterfinals of the league tournament.

She bested one of her two opponents.

Garfias also teamed up with Jimenez to reach the quarterfinals of the WAC Doubles Championships.
