Members of Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s girls golf programs traveled to the Sacramento area this past month to participate in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Tournament.

Allison Lewis, Brooke Trio, Abelinah Sanchez, Tiffany Rios, Jadasa Haro and the Bulldogs qualified for Divisionals as a team after taking second at the Western Athletic Conference Championships.

Hawk teammates Elia Hernandez, Kali Bernal and Emily Mariani earned individual berths through the WAC Year-End Tournament.

“This is the first time I’ve taken a team to Divisional,” Ceres High leader Ron Edwards said. “That was our goal. I wanted all the girls to experience that next step.”

“It’s one of the most successful seasons we’ve had,” Central Valley head coach Kelly Wheelock said. “We’ve never had three girls qualify for Divisionals. The most we’ve had was two a couple years ago.”

The Bulldogs finished sixth overall at the Division-IV Tournament on Oct. 28 at Mather Golf Course.

Lewis led Ceres High with a 118.

Trio, Sanchez, Rios and Haro shot 119, 122, 124 and 162, respectively.

“I thought they did pretty well on a course they’ve never played on before,” Edwards said. “They did the best they could do. That’s all I can ask of them.”

Lewis, Trio and Rios represented the Bulldogs for the final time as the three seniors will graduate from Ceres High in June.

Lewis and Trio were four-time Divisional qualifiers.

“I’m going to miss them—their leadership and what they brought to the table golf-wise,” Edwards said. “They held the team together.”

Hawk junior Elia Hernandez carded a 105 at Divisionals.

Central Valley senior Kali Bernal and junior Emily Mariani posted rounds of 116 and 117, respectively.

“They did outstanding,” Wheelock said. “The competition was good, equivalent to what we saw league-wise.”

Bernal, a senior, represented Central Valley for the last time.

She competed at Divisionals for the second year in a row.

She bested her previous-best score at the event by three strokes.

“Each year, she continuously got better,” Wheelock said. “She put in the work. She practiced on her own. That’s why she was successful.”
