Ceres High's varsity girls soccer team snapped Central Valley's 17-game unbeaten streak in Western Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 victory last season.

The Hawks earned a measure of revenge by opening the 2018 WAC campaign with a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs on Thursday at Ceres High.

Central Valley and Ceres High placed first and second, respectively, in conference play a year ago.

"It was a difficult game," said Miguel Larranaga, first-year head coach of the Hawks. "I knew it wasn't going to be easy."

Central Valley improved to 10-0-2 on the year and 1-0-0 in the WAC standings.

Ceres High dropped to 4-3-2 and 0-1.

"I knew it was going to be a competitive game," Bulldog junior sweeper Edith Larranaga. "We both have really good teams. Central Valley has more experienced girls."

Jocelyn Lopez tallied the winning goal for the Hawks.

Lopez scored off a pass from Jackie Sanchez less than 20 minutes into the second half.

Hawk goalkeeper Emely Lopez totaled three saves.

"We were evenly-matched in the first half," Edith said. "Then we started changing our formations and they scored the goal. We need to work on finishing."

Both teams struggled to finish due to Ceres High's rain-soaked field.

"It was basically impossible to pass the ball," Miguel said.

Central Valley had to wait a year but finally exacted revenge against Ceres High.

The Hawks and Bulldogs placed first and second, respectively, in the 2017 WAC standings.

Central Valley won two of its three games versus Ceres High.
