Central Valley's varsity boys basketball team avoided a major letdown by compiling a 2-2 record at the Modesto City Tournament this past week.

The Hawks won their final two games.

"It's good for the kids' confidence," Central Valley head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "You don't want to start the year off 0-4."

Central Valley closed out the tourney with a 66-33 win over Turlock Christian on Saturday at Johansen.

Daniel Villasenor led the Hawks with 18 points.

Max Sanchez added 14 points.

Miguel Jimenez, Hanson Hy, Munraj Singh and Grant Neang all contributed six points.

David Serrano and Tony Gaut finished with four points apiece.

Kevin Figueroa had two points.

Central Valley dominated from start to finish.

The Hawks buried 10 3-pointers.

"We put the game away in the first half," Rodriguez said. "We utilized our traps on defense and got some easy buckets. We shot the ball exceptionally well. We executed."

Central Valley outlasted Hughson 63-56 Friday at Modesto High.

Villasenor paced the Hawks with a career-high 26 points.

Sanchez and Hy chipped in with nine points each.

Serrano and Neang tallied seven and six points, respectively.

Jimenez and Singh both collected three points.

The Huskies opened the tournament with back-to-back wins.

"Hughson has a solid team," Rodriguez said. "It was definitely nice to beat them. We played with a lot of energy on both ends of the floor. The kids picked up their intensity."
