Hawks compete on wrestling mat

Central Valley High School’s wrestling program staged a pair of Western Athletic Conference dual meets at home this past week.

“We’re just trying to get kids matches,” Hawks’ head coach Rob Beckhart said. “We’re doing scrimmages. There are no team scores.”

The Central Valley-Grace Davis Western Athletic Conference dual meet featured 27 individual matches on Friday.

Central Valley’s Ruben Valenzuela won by pin against Grace Davis’ Carson Struve and Dylan Sandner.

Juan Melgoza won by pin against Grace Davis’ Edris Said.

Malakhi Gilmore won by pin against Dylan Sandner and Said Said.

Enrique Gonzalez won by pin against Thomas Flores.

Camden Cai won by pin against Hawk teammate Makhai Smith.

Savannah Garcia won by pin against Hawk teammate Abigail Garcia.

Julia Roton won by pin against Hawk teammate Crystal Melgoza.

Angelina Sanchez won by pin against Hawk teammate Sammy Espinoza.

Bella Pelayo won by pin against Hawk teammate Abigail Garcia.

Held on Wednesday, the Central Valley-Los Banos WAC meet also consisted of 27 individual matches.

Valenzuela won by pin against Jason Mendoza and Raymond Fernandez.

Davian Lemus won by pin against Isaiah Castillo.

Gonzalez won by pin against Castillo.

Juan Melgoza won by pin against Alexis Rodriguez.

Cai won by pin against Smith.

Abigail Garcia won by pin against Arodiht Nunez.

Bella Pelayo won by pin against Nunez.

“I’m happy with them,” Beckhart said. “We’re losing more matches than we’re winning. A lot of the kids are brand-new. I’m trying to get them to be aggressive and learn the sport at the same time. Their attitudes are good. The effort and desire are there.”
