Hawks drop out of race for WAC wrestling title

Livingston and Patterson eliminated Central Valley from the race for the Western Athletic Conference varsity boys wrestling dual-meet title last week.

The Hawks dropped from first to second in the WAC after being beaten by the Wolves and Tigers.

"There's a lot of disappointment in the room right now," head coach Rob Beckhart said. "It will be interesting to see how the guys perform on Wednesday. We have a history of wrestling tough against Ceres."

Central Valley fell to 2-2 in the conference standings after suffering a 43-31 loss at Livingston on Jan. 25.

The first-place Wolves moved to 4-0 in the WAC.

"We lost some close matches that were pivotal," Beckhart said.

Central Valley won six of its 14 individual matches versus Livingston.

Nathan Curry won by pin (1:13) against Alex Calvillo at 160 pounds.

Thomas Carrillo won by pin (1:33) against Jorge Giron at 182 pounds.

James Murphy won by pin (2:41) against Xavier Sanchez at 152 pounds.

Natanael Lezama won by pin (5:18) against Ivan Calvillo at 195 pounds.

Ryan Palecek won by major decision (15-2) against Andres Garcia at 170 pounds.

Moises Galeana won by decision (4-1) against Eduardo Reyna at 220 pounds.

Kyle Hendrix lost by decision (4-0) to Juan Garcia at 132 pounds.

Edgar Castillo lost by decision (6-2) to Felix Lorenzo at 285 pounds.

Michael Duran lost by pin (5:50) to Dennis Brusenski at 126 pounds.

Anthony Voss lost by pin (1:147) to Mathew Cisneros at 120 pounds.

Roman Ramirez lost by pin (1:35) to Adrian Perez at 145 pounds.

Alan Chavez lost by pin (1:35) to Cristian Peralta at 138 pounds.

Jesse Vazquez lost by pin (0:47) to Filiberto Salazar at 106 pounds.

Central Valley lost by forfeit to Alex Mendez at 113 pounds.

First-place Patterson (4-0) dealt Central Valley its first WAC dual-meet loss of the season on Jan. 24.

The Hawks fell 52-21 to the host Tigers.

"We knew it was going to be tough," Beckhart said. "They have a strong lineup."

Central Valley mustered just four individual victories versus Patterson.

Curry won by pin (2:54) against Joel Ramirez at 160 pounds.

Murphy won by pin (4:39) against Jerrod Villalon at 152 pounds.

Carrillo won by pin (5:01) against Cameron Fredrickson at 182 pounds.

Hendrix won by decision (4-2) against Alex Sanchez at 138 pounds.

Lezama lost by decision (8-5) to David Valverde at 195 pounds.

Vazquez lost by decision (22-17) to Jeremy Hernandez at 106 pounds.

Galeana lost by pin (3:56) to Arron Botkin at 220 pounds.

Palecek lost by pin (3:34) to AJ Polk at 170 pounds.

Ramirez lost by pin (2:59) to Francisco Duran at 145 pounds.

Castillo lost by pin (1:51) to Jacob Vainuku at 285 pounds.

Phillip Martinez lost by pin (1:29) to Noah Mirelez at 132 pounds.

Duran lost by technical fall (16-0) to Chase Mirelez at 126 pounds.

Voss lost by technical fall (24-9) to Mokbel Obeid at 120 pounds.

The Hawks lost by forfeit to Adrian Berrera at 113 pounds.

Central Valley will host crosstown-rival Ceres High (2-2) today at 7 p.m.

"Ceres has the edge but I've learned not to doubt our kids," Beckhart said. "It's definitely going to be a challenge for us."
