Palecek leads Hawks at Reno boys wrestling tournament

Central Valley's varsity boys wrestling team ran into stiff competition at the Dec. 28-29 Sierra Nevada Classic last week in Reno.

Hawk grapplers posted a combined record of 11-27 in Reno.

Central Valley had no individual placers.

"It's a tough tournament," coach Rob Beckhart said. "We've never had a placer. And we've had some quality wrestlers."

Ryan Palecek was the Hawks' top performer.

He won three of five matches in the 170-pound weight class.

Palecek bested Napa's Brady Bledsoe (pin, 4:42), Escalon's Alfredo Zarate (decision, 9-4) and Lakeland's Hank Steele (pin, 2:15).

He lost to Marshfield's Travis Wittlake (pin, 2:25) and Carson City's Bryce Newhall (pin, 2:38).

"That's the best Ryan has wrestled all year," Beckhart said. "It's good to see him have success. He works hard, doesn't miss practice and never complains."

Kyle Hendrix and Tyler Beckhart posted identical 2-2 records at 132 and 220 pounds, respectively.

Hendrix bested North Valley's Joaquin Arevalo (decision, 4-1) and Thurston's Brett Hieter (pin, 1:28).

He lost to Madera South's Matthew Posas (major decision, 10-1) and El Dorado's Joshua Sparks (pin, 1:00).

Beckhart bested Escalon's David Camacho (pin, 5:27) and Vista del Lago's Martin Lucero (pin, 2:54).

He lost to Hughson's Kenneth Martinez (major decision, 12-1) and Sparks' Julius Rice-Misa (pin, 2:25).

Sebastian Pena, Anthony Voss, Roman Ramirez and James Murphy won one of three matches at 113, 120, 145 and 152 pounds, respectively.

Pena bested McQueen's Edgar Chavez (decision, 17-15).

He lost to Vista del Lago's Grant Roush (pin, 1:52) and North Valley's Garrett Walker (pin, 1:34).

Voss bested Etna's Logan Giertz (pin, 2:42).

He lost to Douglas' Max Smith (pin, 4:59) and Corning's Frank Gregorio (pin, 3:52).

Ramirez bested Mater Dei's Aiden Resendiz (pin, 1:27).

He lost to Rocklin's Max Pitts (pin, 3:48) and Burns' Dawson Williams (decision, 5-2).

Murphy bested Elko's Ezekiel Stewart (pin, 1:27).

He lost to Modesto Christian's Patrick Garcia (pin, 3:42) and Silver Creek's Minh Nguyen (decision, 7-1).

Jesse Vazquez, Michael Duran, Christian Uresti, Mason Lourenco, Nathan Curry, Thomas Carrillo and Edgar Castilo finished 0-2 at 106, 126, 138, 152, 160, 182 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Vazquez lost to Lowry's Isaac Mori (pin, 0:33) and Temescal Canyon's Julian Gutierrez (pin, 0:28).

Duran lost to Temescal Canyon's Christian Bacillo (pin, 2:12) and Lowry's Matthew Souza (technical fall, 20-3).

Uresti lost to Elko's Joshua Boulard (pin, 3:37) and Mountain View's Hunter Chariton (pin, 1:44).

Lourenco lost to Winters' Kendrick Borchard (pin, 1:05) and Yerington's Vincent Davis (pin, 1:58).

Curry lost to Centennial's Ike Edwards (pin, 1:46) and Battle Ground's Noah Renk (pin, 4:00).

Carrillo lost to Carson City's Jesse Case (pin, 1:20) and Yerington's Jaydan Vasquez (medical forfeit).

Castillo lost to Marshfield's Phillip Hernandez (decision, 3-0) and Winter's Angel Vital (pin, 1:58).

Central Valley totaled 29 points while finishing in 63rd place in the team standings at the Sierra Nevada Classic.
