Quiroz, Hawks claim medals at South Regionals

Central Valley senior Brianna Quiroz won all four of her matches on her way to finishing in first place in the 150-pound weight bracket at the Sac-Joaquin Section South Regional Tournament this past week in Ceres.

Central Valley varsity girls wrestling teammates Brianna Quiroz, Carla Martinez, Angelina Sanchez, Hannah Duncan, Sam Espinoza and Nia Caraway have all advanced to the next postseason round.

Quiroz, Martinez, Sanchez, Duncan, Espinoza and Caraway earned individual berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament after finishing in the top eight in their respective weight classes at South Regionals this past weekend in Ceres.

The host Hawks totaled 101 points while placing fifth in the team standings.

Tokay (158.5), Atwater (139), Ripon (132) and Los Banos (105) took first, second, third and fourth, respectively.

Quiroz won all four of her matches en route to a first-place finish at 150 pounds.

She beat Pacheco’s Karina Navarrete (technical fall, 16-0), Atwater’s Briana Juarez (pin, 5:28), Livingston’s Ashly Leos (pin, 0:25) and Buhach Colony’s Amy Urzua (pin, 0:18).

“I can attribute her success to her overall athleticism,” Beckhart said. “She also has a desire to not lose.”

Quiroz is vying for her second straight trip to the CIF State Meet.

“She’s really focused right now,” Beckhart said. “She knows what it takes to win.”

Martinez (131 pounds, 5-1 record) placed third.

She beat Atwater’s Jessica Garcia (decision, 3-1), Los Banos’ Alana Watkins (pin, 5:52), Lincoln’s Scarlett Crespo-Herrera (pin, 4:45), Golden Valley’s Cassidy Thongsy (pin, 1:08) and East Union’s Amiaya Guyton (pin, 2:42). 

Martinez bounced back after losing to Delhi’s Naomi Cortez (pin, 3:29) in the semifinals.

“She won back-to-back matches,” Beckhart said. “She showed resolve. That’s what’s going to make her successful off the mat, too.”

Sanchez (189s, 2-2) placed fifth.

She beat Mountain House’s Jessi Emerson twice by pin (2:41, 0:24).

Sanchez lost to Merced’s Maria Hernandez (pin, 2:17) and eventual-champion Valerie Osborn of Oakdale (pin, 0:33).

Duncan (235s, 0-3) placed sixth.

She lost to Ceres High’s Vanessa Sanchez (pin, 4:04), Lincoln’s Aneisha Goodlaw (pin, 0:40) and Pacheco’s Tagivale Vaifale (pin, 0:42).

Espinoza (170s, 3-2) placed seventh.

She beat Bear Creek’s Jenessa Serrano (pin, 0:38), Delhi’s Mira Espino-Reyes (pin, 1:42) and Pacheco’s Mayra Ramirez (pin, 1:27).

She lost to Atwater’s Jackie Martinez (pin, 3:47) and Buhach Colony’s Alejandra Gonzalez (pin, 1:40).

Caraway (143s, 2-3) placed eighth.

She beat Golden Valley’s Precious Yang (pin, 0:44) and Sierra’s Jessica Guzman (forfeit).

Caraway lost to Central Catholic’s Reanne Ferrer (pin, 4:01), Ripon’s Riley Rangel (pin, 3:41) and Pacheco’s Yareli Botello (pin, 3:28).

Central Valley’s Vanesa Contreras, Aryanna Jimenez, Abigail Garcia, Isabella Pelayo and Esther Esceverri compiled identical 1-2 records.

Contreras beat Beyer’s Amyah Willis (pin, 2:25) at 101 pounds.

She lost to Sierra’s Ezra Mora (pin, 2:14) and Manteca’s Azucena Rodriguez (pin, 0:38).

Jimenez beat Pacheco’s Yasmin Garcia (decision, 8-7) at 116 pounds.

She lost to Turlock’s Evy Tovar (pin, 3:58) and Ripon’s Alyssa Oliver (pin, 1:21).

Garcia beat Denair’s Lexy Gridley (pin, 3:59) at 121 pounds.

She lost to Ripon’s Avery Thomason (decision, 7-2) and Bear Creek’s Serena Lara (pin, 0:24).

Pelayo beat Turlock Christian’s Katie Overton (pin, 0:08) at 126 pounds.

She lost to Downey’s Serenity Angeles (pin, 1:34) and Lodi’s Elizabeth Decko (major decision, 13-3).

Esceverri beat Modesto High’s Gabriella Felix (pin, 2:49) at 137 pounds.

She lost to Central Catholic’s Sam Rodgers (pin, 4:36) and Atwater’s Ulyette Curiel (pin, 5:44).

Alyssa Chaboya, Emily Hill and Natalie Torres all went 0-2.

Chaboya lost to Merced’s Alejandra Sanchez (pin, 1:03) and Buhach Colony’s Edith Farias (pin, 0:52) at 106 pounds.

Hill lost to Los Banos’ Julia Casillas (decision, 5-0) and Edison’s Felicia Luna (pin, 1:31) at 111 pounds.

Torres lost to Patterson’s Brisa Salas (pin, 1:40) and Pacheco’s Evie Villareal (pin, 2:12) at 160 pounds.

“All of the girls gave 100 percent,” Beckhart said. “I couldn’t be prouder of their effort.”

The Masters Tournament will be staged Feb. 15-16 at Lincoln of Stockton.
