Central Valley’s varsity boys tennis team wrapped up the first half of the Western Athletic Conference season with a 6-3 loss at Los Banos on March 22.
“The guys are working hard and getting better,” Hawks head coach Mike Rodriguez said. “They’re starting to play more aggressive.”
Central Valley (2-4) dropped to fifth in the WAC standings.
Los Banos (3-3) took over sole possession of fourth place.
“I expected us to be around .500,” Rodriguez said. “We got a lot of first-year players. Other teams are more consistent than us.”
Central Valley won two of six singles and one of three doubles matches versus Los Banos.
Henry Garcia defeated Jared Haug 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.
Juan Zaragoza defeated Will Marchese 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles play.
Ralph Afortunado and Alonzo Bustos defeated Andy Rios and Patrick Martinez 6-2, 7-5 in No. 2 doubles play.
Adrian Garcia and Daniel Garrido lost 6-1, 6-2 to Jorge Gutierrez and Max Bell in No. 1 doubles play.
Ivan Jimenez and Javier Palafox lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to Thomas King and Paul Reyes in No. 3 doubles play.
Ruben Morales lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to Quentin Barcellos in No. 1 singles play.
Jesus Cuevas lost 6-3, 6-4 to Jake Gerstenberg in No. 4 singles play.
Rogelio Perez lost 6-2, 6-1 to Michael Butler in No. 5 singles play.
Roman Ortiz lost 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to Giovanni Mevi in No. 6 singles play.
Manuel Lazcano, a transfer from Ceres High, will be eligible to play for the Hawks during the second half of the WAC season.
Lazcano will start at No. 2 singles.
“Everyone moves down to their normal spot in the lineup,” Rodriguez said. “It’s going to make us better.”
