Hughson High School's varsity wrestling team will be sending five grapplers to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament this week in Stockton.

Jesse McDaniel, Chase Herrin, Daniel Williams, Ernie Villegas and Andrew Patrick advanced after doing well in their respective weight classes at the Division V meet, held last Friday and Saturday in Summerville.

"It's a big jump from last season," head coach Steve Vieira said. "We only had one kid that qualified."

McDaniel finished in second place at 145 pounds. Jesse qualified for Masters in 2010.

"He's placed at every tournament we've gone to," Vieira said.

Herrin (103s), Williams (112s) and Villegas (119s) all placed third.

Patrick (130s) took fourth.

The Huskies also experienced team success at Divisionals.

Third-place Hughson finished behind Calaveras and Escalon.

"We kind of figured we'd be in the top five," Vieira said. "Taking third is a little bit of a surprise. We had a pretty good weekend. Some of the matches came down to conditioning."

The Huskies (8-5, 4-2) placed second overall at the Trans-Valley League championships the previous weekend.

Hughson won five of its 11 duals last season. The Huskies struggled to a 2-3 record in league.

"The guys are maturing and buying into what we're telling them," said Vieira," Hughson's second-year leader. "Their hard work is paying off."

BASKETBALL

Hughson High School's varsity girls basketball team won one of its final two league games last week.

The Huskies beat host Riverbank in Trans-Valley League play on Thursday.

Hughson (14-10, 8-4) will participate in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs this week.

The 10th-seeded Huskies faced off against the No. 7 Argonaut Mustangs (21-7) in the opening round on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The score was unavailable at press time.
