Oakdale posted a 17-point victory over the Central Valley High JV girls basketball team on Dec. 9. The Hawks edged the Mustangs 24-23 on Jan. 10 in Ceres.

“We played smart,” Central Valley coach Jesse Padilla said.

Desiree Vasquez led the Hawks (1-3) with 11 points, including two 3-pointers. Miranda Espinoza scored five points, including the game-winning basket from the middle of the key with 2.2 seconds left in regulation. Crystal Gutierrez and Latrisha Jordan had four points apiece.

“Ball control was key,” Padilla said. “We walked it up. They walked it up. I knew it was going to be close. Luckily, we were making our shots. We also broke their press.”

Down 13-9, the Hawks outscored the Mustangs 15-10 in the final 16 minutes. Vasquez, Jordan and Espinoza had nine, four and two points, respectively. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff reporter of the Ceres (Calif.) Courier
