The Valley Oak League's top two JV boys basketball teams faced off at Bud Castle Gymnasium Wednesday night in Sonora.
The Hawks failed to take the lead and/or force overtime in the final 12 seconds in losing 48-45 to the host Wildcats.
Down 47-45, Trevor Mew missed a 3-pointer from the right side with 5 seconds left in regulation.
Gerald Garcia missed a two-handed desperation shot from halfcourt at the buzzer after Sonora extended its lead to three by making one of two free throws with 3 seconds remaining.
“I really liked the effort,” Central Valley coach Darryl Dickson said. “We played hard. The defense for both teams was really good.”
Center Sean McLeod scored a game-high 15 points, including just 4 of 12 free throws, for the Hawks. He fouled out with six minutes remaining.
“Sean was by far the best player on the court,” Dickson said. “He was a tank. They couldn't stop him.”
Mew, Tony Marquez and Yama Noorzai added 12, 10 and eight points, respectively.
Taylor Thrift led Sonora with 13 points and four rebounds.
Brenden Evans added 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Wildcats outscored the Hawks 45-35 during the final three quarters of play.
“We lost for two reasons,” Dickson said. “We shot 5-for-18 from the free-throw line. And we got into foul trouble. We better not lose anymore games because of free throws.”
Central Valley led 10-3 at the end of the first quarter.
“We had an opportunity to be up quite a bit,” Dickson said. “We had four or five two-on-ones and didn't convert. We missed some easy layups and threw the ball away.”
Hawks 53, Buffaloes 42
Central Valley's starters accounted for all 53 points Friday night at Manteca.
Noorzai finished with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. McLeod had 14 points. Mew and Marquez had nine points apiece. Garcia added four points.
Each team totaled 38 points through the first three quarters of play.
The Hawks outscored the Buffaloes 15-4 in the final eight minutes.
Central Valley shot 56 percent (10-for-18) from the free-throw line for the game.
