Lady Dawgs win one of two in league

The Ceres High volleyball team defeated Modesto High 25-21, 25-22, 25-16 in Ceres on Sept. 14.

The Panthers got revenge with a 18-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-11, 15-13 victory over the Bulldogs in Modesto Thursday night.

"You can't take any team for granted," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia.

With the loss, Ceres (4-8) fell into a tie for third in the Modesto Metro Conference with Johansen at 3-3.

"We're going to try and change some things to stay a little more intense throughout a match," Garcia said.

Elisha Ferguson led the Bulldogs with 24 digs, 20 assists and two aces. Meghan Franksen had 20 digs and six kills. Krystle Brown had 11 kills and three blocks. Jessica Mazza had five kills. Jessica Hunter had three aces. Katie Richards was 9-for-9 serving.

Ali Barbosa had 13 digs, seven kills and one block, Jennifer Amador dished out 14 assists and Cori Stubbs added seven aces for Modesto, which improved to 2-4 in the league standings.

Momentum swayed in the fourth game.

Down 2 games to 1, Stubbs served 12 straight points in leading the Panthers to a 14-point rout.

"I just really have to commend Modesto High for their tenacity and quick defensive play," Garcia said. "They played an excellent match.

"They played with an energy level, which was stronger than ours."

Ceres 3, Davis 2

The Bulldogs turned in their most impressive performance of the season against the Spartans at Ceres High School on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

With Ferguson, Brown and Franksen leading the way, Ceres beat Davis 25-10, 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-8.

Ferguson had 37 assists and 13 digs, Brown tallied 16 kills and four blocks and Franksen added eight aces for the Bulldogs. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
