The Mae Hensley Junior High leadership class brainstormed for three days prior to selecting a beneficiary.

"This year, we had seven or eight possibilities," said Mae Hensley student leadership teacher Darryl Dickson. "The kids really clung to Amanda (Schulte)."

Proceeds from the Fifth Annual Charity Basketball Game will be donated to Schulte, 19, a former student who is awaiting a heart and lung transplant.

Approximately 32 students from Dickson's leadership class organized and directed the event, which was held in front of a packed house in the school's gymnasium on Thursday. Around $4,500 was raised.

Dickson served as master of ceremonies and introduced Schulte to the crowd prior to the start of the main event. Schulte gave a brief speech to more than 900 people, thanked the schools for their support and selected names from a box during the raffling of a 32-inch television and DVD player.

"It's all for a great cause," Dickson said.

Three basketball games were played.

With Dickson leading the way, Mae Hensley's faculty defeated Blaker-Kinser's faculty 73-66. Dickson, Rob Gonzales and Justin White had 32, 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Warriors. Derrick Magee had a team-high 26 points for the Sharks.

The Mae Hensley eighth-grade boys basketball team lost 64-43 to Brett Sayad and the Blaker-Kinser eighth-grade boys basketball team.

The Lady Warriors eighth-grade basketball team lost 42-21 to the Central Valley Hornets of Salida.

"It was a long day, very tiring," Dickson said.

Mae Hensley Principal Karl Modgling recently donated $4,000 to the University of San Francisco Children's Hospital. The donation was made possible by last year's benefit basketball game. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
