Offense lacking for baseball team

Modesto High handed the Ceres High baseball team its 12 straight loss of the season on Friday in Ceres.

The Panthers posted a 7-2 victory over the Bulldogs.

"We had a runner at second base five out of the seven innings and we only scored two runs," said Ceres coach Tim Williams. "The offense is just not getting it done."

The Bulldogs fell to 3-17 overall, 1-9 in the Central California Conference standings.

The Panthers improved to 4-6 in league.

Ceres has no place to go but up.

"Hopefully, we can win a couple games in the next three weeks and end on a positive note," Williams said.

Modesto scored two runs in each of the first three innings. The Panthers scored their final run in the top of the seventh inning.

Ceres scored two runs on seven hits and one error.

The Bulldogs scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brad Simmons had an RBI.

Ceres pitcher Derrick Goblirsch gave up six runs on five hits and four walks in 22/3 innings. He had three strikeouts.

Chad Leazer shutdown Modesto for 31/3 innings.

"He threw well," Williams said. "He didn't give up any runs."

Nick Eudy relieved Leazer in the seventh. He allowed one run.

Hector Reyes homered and Simmons and Fernando Vargas each had two hits but it wasn't enough to lead the Bulldogs past the Panthers at Modesto High School on Wednesday.

Ceres pitcher Mike Arnold gave up three runs on six hits and two errors.

Modesto took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ceres cut Modesto's lead to two in the top of the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs got to within one run in the seventh inning.
