The Ceres High boys soccer team overcame a sluggish start and defeated Downey at the Ceres River Bluff Regional Park on Friday.

The Bulldogs scored five unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 6-1 victory over the Knights.

Victor Perez and Fernando Vargas both scored twice, Eduardo Aguilar tallied a goal and an assist and Ricardo Castellanos and Luis Olivares each had two assists for the Bulldogs, who improved to 4-3 in the Modesto Metro Conference, 11-6-1 overall.

"It wasn't very close," said Ceres coach Joe Byrne.

Armando Reyes scored for the Knights, who fell to 0-7 in the league standings.

The Bulldogs led 1-0 at halftime.

"We didn't play very well in the first half, especially in the first 20 minutes," Byrne said.

"Our finishing was pretty awful. We had eight or nine shots and only scored one goal."

Vargas scored off a pass from Olivares in the 16th minute.

Reyes evened the score in the 42nd minute.

"Then we put them away," Byrne said.

Perez scored from 10 yards out off a rebound in the 51st minute.

He scored his second goal in the 59th minute when he avoided a slide tackle and beat the keeper from 14 yards out. Castellanos delivered the pass.

Perez has netted 26 goals this season, including 11 in seven league games.

"He's been a great asset for us this year," Byrne said. "That's for sure."

JV edge Knights

The Bulldogs rallied from a 1-0 deficit and edged the Downey Knights 2-1 in Ceres on Friday.

"They're a good team but we're better," said Ceres coach Armando Martinez.

The Bulldogs (9-2-2) remained in first place in the Modesto Metro League with a 7-0-1 record.
