The Ceres American Legion baseball team overcame a three-run deficit and edged Hughson 8-7 in nine innings at Art McRae Field in Ceres Thursday afternoon.

Ceres pitcher Hector Reyes had eight strikeouts and Derek Stanhope knocked in the winning run in the eighth inning.

Reyes was supposed to start the game but had another commitment--summer school.

"I knew he was going to be running a little late so it was no big deal," said Ceres coach Tim Williams. "We gave him the second-inning start."

Reyes allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in five innings. He hit two batters and walked one.

"He threw well but there's still room for improvement," Williams said.

Hughson scored twice in the top of the eighth to take a 7-6 lead.

Cameron Lund scored from third on Dave Whiteside's sacrifice fly to left field.

Jake Avila scored from second on Don Eddings' double to center field.

Ceres scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Ray Perea singled, stole second and scored when Hughson's second baseman dropped Reyes' infield fly.

Stanhope drove home Reyes from second with an RBI single to left field.

"The young kids are delivering," Williams said.

Hughson built a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Whiteside singled to center and moved to second when Avila was hit by a pitch. Eddings cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field off Ceres starting pitcher Tyler Tresenrider.

Ceres cut Hughson's lead to 3-1 in the second inning.

Brandon Gresham scored from third on Tresenrider's grounder.

Hughson extended its lead to 4-1 with a run in the third.

Avila scored from third on a throwing error.

Ceres responded with four runs in the fourth off Hughson relief pitcher Wade Hines.

Jake Loveland lined a single to right-center field, stole second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on Jake Garrett's single to center.

Reyes and Perea followed with back-to-back RBI singles to center field. Brian Borges added a two-out RBI single to left field.

Hughson evened the score at 5 in the sixth inning.

Avila took first base after getting hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Eddings' single to left field.

Ceres took a 6-5 lead in the seventh.

Luis Malagon and Tresenrider singled to left field.

Malagon stole third and scored on Mario Navarro's double-play groundout.

Perea came on in relief in the seventh inning for Ceres.

The right-handed pitcher gave up two runs and three hits in three innings. He had four strikeouts.

Ceres and Downey will be playing a doubleheader at Downey High School today. The first game starts at 1:30 p.m.
