The Central California Conference announced its girls soccer All-Conference team and individual award winners for the 2003-2004 school year. The awards were decided following a vote by the league's 10 head coaches at Turlock High School on May 12. The meeting lasted 90 minutes.
Two of Ceres High's players were recognized, including Lucero Villasenor and Brittany Randle.
Ceres coach Randy Cerny thought another player, Michelle Guzman, should have also been rewarded. The senior defender had three goals and one assist.
"It would have been nice for her to get some recognition but it all depends on your record," Cerny said.
Ceres finished ninth in the CCC standings at 3-13-2 and went 8-15-2 overall. The Bulldogs went 3-15 in league, 5-17-2 overall last season.
Villasenor was a second-team, all-CCC selection. The junior forward/midfielder had a team-high four goals and three assists in conference play. "She's aggressive," Cerny said. "She's quick. She moves with the ball very well."
Villasenor was an honorable mention selection her freshman season. She didn't play last year.
"Her coming back really improved our team," Cerny said.
Villasenor could be even more dangerous next season if she takes more chances.
"I'd like to see her shooting from about 20 or 30 yards out," Cerny said. "I have total confidence in her ability to do that."
Randle was an honorable-mention selection. The junior stopper had three assists.
"There's no quit in that girl and she's very physical," Cerny said. "She plays with absolutely no fear whatsoever."
Randle made second-team, all-league as a sophomore.
Soccer banquet
The Bulldogs held their annual awards banquet at Paradise Pizza on May 13.
Villasenor won the Most Valuable Player Award.
She managed to have an outstanding season despite being double teamed. She had a team-high 12 goals and four assists.
Randle and Guzman won the Coach's Award.
"Michelle's been there for me all three years I have coached," Cerny said. "She's my captain. She's a leader on the team. She's a fine player and a fine young lady."
Valerie Chan won the Most Inspirational Award.
"It was an easy choice," Cerny said.
"She does a lot of extra curricular stuff and maintains over a 4.0 weighted grade point average. Academically, she's one of the top five or six students in the entire senior class."
Chan, a senior left fullback, played almost every minute of every game. She marked some of the best offensive players in the Central Valley.
"She's not the biggest or fastest girl out there but she's so smart," Cerny said. "She uses her body well."
Chan always had a positive attitude, worked hard and never whined.
"You asked her to do something and she did it," Cerny said.
Chan was a member of the school's golf and mock trial teams. She's also an accomplished piano player.
