A Salida man was killed in a crash into a tree in front of Summit Charter Academy at 2008 E. Hatch Road early Friday morning.

Ceres Police are unsure what caused the 1:43 a.m. collision that took the life of Joseph Daniel Bunch, 42. Officer John King said that Bunch was westbound on Hatch Road in a gold 1989 Nissan 240 SX and veered into the eastbound lanes in front of the school, striking the curb and hitting the mature tree. The impact collapsed the passenger compartment into the rear seat of the vehicle, killing the driver.

Bunch, the only person in the car, was pronounced dead on scene.

King said he'd like to talk to anyone who might have seen Bunch prior to the crash. Persons who can help with the investigation should call Officer King at 538-5678.
