An early Saturday morning fire destroyed one mobilehome and scorched another in the Lazy Wheels Mobilehome Park.

The fire broke out at 1:43 a.m. in unit #49 in the park, located just west of Ceres High School near the Whitmore Avenue Overpass. Firefighters arrived and found the older single-wide coach fully involved with flames. The fire spread quickly and destroyed the home.

Batallion Chief Michael Lillie said the fire is under investigation. He said the owner was not at home because he is staying with relatives due to health issues.

The loss was pegged at $15,000 for the trailer and $10,000 for contents.

The neighboring trailer at space #48 sustained exterior damage costing $5,000. Its occupants managed to get out of the trailer to safety.

Lillie said that the cause of the fire is under investigation but noted both trailers were older. The unit that was a total loss was scheduled to be removed for the Whitmore interchange project now underway.
