The city of Ceres Recreation Division took time at the Dec. 8 Planning Commission meeting to give a shout-out to a number of volunteers who helped out with the fall youth basketball league.

"For the last 20 years - I've been a part of it for the last 16 - we have had a wonderful non-competitive youth basketball league," said Cambria Pollinger, recreation supervisor. "It runs in the fall and we see about 250 kids and basically the concept of it is teaching these kids sportsmanship. Some of these kids will go on make high school and junior high teams but the majority of them don't and it's an opportunity for them to still enjoy and learn the skills and techniques of basketball.

"And in order to make that work it's quite an operation and so in any given year we have 17 to 22 volunteers who step up and coach. These people are all working, they're all parents and through the 10-week season it takes about 20 to 40 hours of their personal time they dedicate to these kids. They're all Ceres kids."

The volunteers who were honored were: Harrison Aquino, James Anderson, Tracy Bull, Rob Cervantez, Channce Condit, Chad Condit, Bobby Driskill, Mickey Duran, Mike Duran, Jeff Eddings, Shannon Gonzalez, Bill Kidd, Coach McLelland, Maddie Maines, Ismael Ontiveros, Manuel Ortega, Les Pollard, Jim Pernetti, Paula Redfern, Marcos Rodriguez and Audel Valencia.
