Perez served in the Army and became a Ceres Police officer in 1977 and worked his way up to sergeant before retiring in 2002. Sgt. Perez was a mentor to many officers he worked with but was best known as a great family man who spent countless hours with his family off duty. In his later years, he enjoyed dropping by the department to catch up with fellow co-workers.
