A 38-year-old man from Riverside was killed Thursday evening when he crashed after entering Highway 99 from the southbound S. Ninth Street at a high rate of speed.

According to the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 7:50 p.m., Lawrence Garavito Sr. had just entered onto the southbound freeway just south of Hatch Road in a 2019 Chevrolet when he swerved to the right, hitting an unoccupied disabled vehicle on the shoulder. The driver lost control and continued in a southwesterly direction until he collided into a chain-link fence and overturned onto Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Garavito was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in this collision.
