Sheriff’s deputy strikes pedestrian on S. Ninth St.
Crash

A 34-year-old man who was running across South Ninth Street sustained serious injuries when he was struck by a Sheriff’s deputy patrol vehicle in the dark early Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the 12:55 a.m. crash occurred south of Pecos Avenue. Deputy Derek Crowley was driving a fully-marked patrol vehicle southbound on South Ninth Street, in the number 1 lane when Alvin Estrada was running with another pedestrian on Pecos Avenue, in an easterly direction into Crowley’s path. Crowley braked and veered to the right but was able was able to avoid the first pedestrian, but hit Estrada who was trailing behind. Estrada sustained injuries to both legs. He was rushed to Doctors Medical Center.

Deputy Crowley was not injured.
