Spray paint cans and a small propane tank exploded inside two burning sheds in South Modesto on Wednesday evening but quick work by firefighters prevented damage to neighboring houses.

The fire broke out at 7:17 p.m. in the 1000 block of Boulder Avenue near El Paso Avenue.

Modesto Regional Fire responded with five fire engines, one truck, and three chiefs. Ceres Fire provided auto aid and responded. A large power drop at the rear of the property was on the ground and arcing with flashes of bright light which kept firefighters back for a while. After TID secured the power the crews were able to move in and get the fire under control.

The outbuildings were full of debris, one had several spray paint cans and a small propane tank, all of which contributed to the explosions.

Occupants of three houses were evacuated but crews keep the fire away from the houses and all residents were allowed to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The fires caused an estimated damage of $3,000.
