The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County saw a slight increase in July, but remained below the year-ago estimate, according to the latest report from the Employment Development Department.
The unemployment rate for July was at 11.4 percent, which is up from the adjusted rate of 11 percent recorded in June, but down from the year-ago estimate of 13 percent.
The rise in the unemployment largely comes from decreases in the farming and government sectors. Between June and July the farming sector recorded a 16.6 percent decline in jobs, according to the EDD. In June an estimated 16,900 individuals were employed in the farming sector and in July that number had decreased to approximately 14,100.
The government sector saw an estimated 800 fewer jobs in July. All of those jobs were in school districts, the majority of which are considered temporary layoffs.
The manufacturing sector recorded an increase in jobs in July by an estimated 1,200 positions, the EDD reported. Of those, 3.2 percent were in the manufacturing of durable goods.
The EDD estimated Stanislaus County had a labor force of 236,300, with 209,400 employed and 26,900 unemployed.
The unemployment rate in Merced County rose from 12.3 percent in June to 12.7 percent in July. In San Joaquin County the unemployment rate rose to 11.1 percent, up from 10. 3 percent in June.
California's unadjusted unemployment rate was at 7.8 percent in July and the nation's was at 6.5 percent for the same time frame.
Ceres had a July rate of 14.3 percent, up from 13.9 percent. Hughson had an unemployment rate of 15 percent, up from 14.6 percent. Keyes saw their rate increase from 19 percent to 20.4 percent. The unemployment rate in Turlock rose to 8.6 percent in July, up from 8.3 percent. Denair had an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent, which is up from the 6 percent recorded in June.
