'Love Ceres' set for Saturday

The second ever "Love Ceres" event will take place Saturday with about a hundred volunteers expected to tend to a morning of tasks to improve the quality of life in Ceres.

The first ever event - hosted by Modesto and Ceres churches - on April 2 drew over 500 persons. Saturday's event has attracted around 100 workers so far.

"It's very slow this time," said Becki Barton Nicholes who is helping Big Valley Grace Church help organize the Ceres event. "We barely have over a hundred."

Affecting sign-ups for workers are summer vacations, she said. Schools and school clubs got involved last time but those resources are not available since school is out, she added.

One job which has plenty of volunteers is an outreach to the youth who use the Ceres skatepark. Nicholes said energy drinks will be passed out as adults and others reach out to the kids.

Cancelled jobs include the e-waste collection and work at the Teen Challenge ranch.

An area that needs more workers are persons to help clean up Ceres parks as well as assisting elderly and disabled to clean up properties.

A list of jobs need filling may be viewed at the church's website, www.loveceres.com or http://ceres.lovemodesto.com. The June 19 deadline has been extended for persons who want to sign up.

The event will start with a 9 a.m. gathering for instructions at the Ceres Community Center, 2701 Fourth Street.
