An early Sunday morning shooting west of Ceres left a teenage boy dead and a teenage girl in critical condition on Sunday morning. A second girl was also wounded but was in stable condition.

The shooting occurred before 1 a.m. in the 1500 block of Modoc Avenue in South Modesto.

Sheriff's Department detectives said all three victims and a third girl were sitting in a parked vehicle on Modoc Avenue, when a white sport utility vehicle (SUV) rode past their vehicle and an occupant fired several shots at the victims, including the 16- and 17-year-old girls. The SUV then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Killed in the shooting was Esteban Ramirez, a 17-year-old from Manteca. The two other victims, both Hispanic females, where transported to local hospitals. The worst of the injured girls was reported to be paralyzed.

Earwitnesses say that six rounds were fired in the shooting, which is likely gang related.

The death was the seventh homicide in Stanislaus County this year.
