The city of Ceres will be implementing new transit service changes and increasing transit fares starting in January.

New weekend services for Ceres Area Transit (CAT) will begin on a new weekend route - Route C. Additionally, there will be minor modifications to the existing Route A. There will be changes to Route B. Routes A and B operate Monday through Friday. Listed below are some highlights on the changes to CAT effective Jan. 1:

• Added weekend CAT service on a new Route C. This route will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday every 60 minutes. The first Saturday to operate is Jan. 5 and the first Sunday to operate is Jan. 6.

• Modify Route A - near Mae Hensley Junior School - twice per day, weekdays due to increased traffic congestion near the school during school hours. Students will need to walk about a block further to catch the bus.

•Modify Route B. This route will be revised in southwest Ceres to offer more two-way bus service. There will be an additional bus running in the afternoon to accommodate Blaker Kinser Junior High and Central Valley High students.

• Update bus stop stickers, on the blue and white CAT bus stop signs to reflect the new routes and schedules. The stickers show what time the bus stops at each posted CAT sign.

• Have CAT operate the same hours as Ceres Dial-A-Ride, seven days a week.

•Changes to the fares on CAT and Ceres Dial-A-Ride (CDAR) due to the increased operating costs.

The CDAR fares for the general public will increase from $1 per ride to $1.25 per ride; and fares for seniors/persons with disabilities/Medicare card holders will increase from 75 cents to $1 per rie. Also, the CAT fares for the general public will increase from 75 cents to $1 per ride; and the fares for seniors/disabled/Medicare card holders will remain the same at 75 cents per ride.

The age for passengers to ride free will change to 5 years or younger instead of 7 years. The free ride stipulation is only up to two children age 5 or younger may ride free when accompanied by a fare paying passenger 16 years or older.
