A funeral service was held Saturday at Turlock Funeral Home for Alfred P. Baptista, 91, of Hughson. He died Feb. 21, 2010 surrounded by family members at his home where he lived for all but six months of his life.

Entombment was at Chapel of the Flowers Mausoleum at Turlock Memorial Park.

Alfred was born Oct. 12, 1918 in Hughson. When he was six months old his parents, John and Ana Baptista, moved the family approximately one mile to 4855 Aldrich Road where Alfred spent nearly all of his remaining years. Alfred left school at an early age to work on the family farm. He was a lifelong farmer. For 50 years he operated the A&A Dairy with his brother Albert. With his brothers Mr. Baptista also operated a commercial harvesting business, Baptista Brothers. For 50 years they harvested dry beans from Ripon to Firebaugh. He enjoyed having breakfast and lunch with family on regular occasion. In 2008 Alfred and brothers Albert and Raymond, were honored by the Hughson Chamber of Commerce and the Hughson Historical Society as long time members of the community. Mr. Baptista was also a member of the Blue Diamond Almond Growers Association and the SES Portuguese Society.

He leaves behind four daughters, Patti Baptista, Cynthia Baptista, Stephanie Mills, and Gurli Dickson; two brothers, Albert Baptista and Raymond Baptista; four sisters, Florence Rose Avelar, Marie Vierra, Mabel Teicheira, and Margaret Oliveira; two granddaughters, Tiffany Christian and Tara Baptista; and one great-grandson, Carter Christian. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ruth Baptista, and brothers Charlie, George, David and Roy Baptista.
