A funeral service was held Saturday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for Christian "Chris" Hilgenberg, 80, of Oakdale. The former Hughson resident died Aug. 2, 2010 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

Born Oct. 8, 1929 in Hutchinson, Kan., Chris attended schools in Colorado and Southern California. He served in the Navy from 1948 to 1952, including two tours of duty in Korea. Mr. Hilgenberg worked as an engineer for Foremost for 32 years and lived in rural Hughson for over 50 years. He moved to Oakdale seven and a half years ago. Chris belonged to Shelter Cove Community Church and loved the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a member of D.A.V., and the Tin Can Sailors Association. Mr. Hilgenberg enjoyed traveling - including to several countries - going on cruises with family and friends, being with family, and attending church.

He leaves behind his wife, LaDean Hilgenberg of Oakdale; his children, Ricky Hilgenberg of Modesto, and Debra Hannink of Denair; his grandchildren, Amanda Gunter and Erica Rogers, both of Hughson, Kyle Hilgenberg of Livingston, Stephen Wright of Salida, and Teresa DiPirro of Modesto; and six great-grandchildren, Jasmine DiPirro, Kendra Rogers, Kaylee Rogers, McKenna Gunter,Kody Wright and Kole Wright.
